In 1976, Father McCarthy introduced
clay work to the normalization phase of the SPRED sessions. After each friend
is welcomed to the SPRED group, he or she chooses some type of
quiet "work" in which he can become involved and absorbed,
something that interests him and helps him relax into a harmonious,
peaceful state. In the quiet, prayerful environment
of fellowship that fills the meeting room, each friend and catechist
works on a soothing activity of choice to help him focus. Some
choose to work with clay, exploring reality and their feelings
about the world around them via this tactile media, creating
an expression of their inner feelings.
Over the years, Father McCarthy
discovered his own skills as a sculptor. Via this form of silent,
active prayer, Father has produced a variety of beautiful, meaningful
religious artwork pieces that adorn the Chicago SPRED Center and chapel.
Some of the sculpture pieces
are available for acquisition. Please feel free to explore our
"gallery" of fine sculpture.
